Wayne County

Welcome!
Your Invitation to Relaxation!

The first steam train in America ran here. The boom to elect Abraham Lincoln began here. Presidents and kings sought products from here. Wayne County has inspired a number of historic moments. Your visit here promises to be just as memorable.

Route 6 traverses the shores of Pennsylvania's third largest man-made lake. Lake Wallenpaupack has become a haven for tourists with 52 miles of shoreline offering endless opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing.  Walk along lake front trails
or enjoy the sights from a number of scenic overlooks.

Tour a region that was born of the anthracite industry yet retained its rural feel. In the village of Hawley you'll see evidence of the county's prosperous past and industrial legacy, including an 1850s Gravity Railroad passenger car. A burgeoning Main Street houses shops and restaurants in century-old buildings while exquisite Victorian architecture marks every thoroughfare.

From Hawley to Honesdale, Route 6 traces the path of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. During the mid-1800s, coal was moved from the mines to market via this revolutionary system of transportation. Remnants of the canal are still visible today.

Some of the most valuable glass in the world came from White Mills, Pa. From 1865 to 1921 Christian Dorflinger created exquisite pieces of cut glass for everyone from President Lincoln to the Prince of Wales. His workshop and homestead were located in the village of White Mills. Today the home houses the largest existing public display of Dorflinger glass in the world. Visitors may tour the home and surrounding grounds, which have been preserved as the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary.

Take the time to visit historic Honesdale. The busy city has maintained a hometown feel with a charming Main Street and picturesque Courthouse Square. Much of the region’s rich history has been preserved in the collection of the Wayne County Historical Society Museum. See a replica of the Stourbridge Lion. America’s first steam locomotive took its maiden voyage in Honesdale. Nearby, visitors may hop aboard the Stourbridge Line for an exciting train excursion from Honesdale to Hawley.

Nature, history and culture combine to create an unforgettable experience in Wayne County!
