Birds take flight in the human imagination and play an important role in the global ecosystem. They travel millions of miles every year migrating around the world, and their life cycles, bird song and evolutionary characteristics have inspired scientists, cultures and artists for millennia. The Museum’s founder, Dr. Isaiah Fawkes Everhart, was a surgeon with an interest in the study of birds. When founding the Museum in 1908, he donated more than 2,000 bird specimens to create the first exhibits. Since that time, the Everhart has continued to collect bird-oriented cultural and scientific materials. The Everhart Museum begins its 2008 centennial celebration with an interpretive look at birds from around the world, alongside cultural objects that use feathers and/or depict birds, as well as contemporary art inspired by avian creatures. The exhibit is partially funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and is on display through June 1, 2008. For more information on the exhibit, contact the Everhart Museum at 570-346-7186 or email: general.information@everhart-museum.org.
