Traveling on Route 6 across northern Pennsylvania a string of small communities greets you. Each town has it’s own character. The unique personality of each community is the result of a refreshing mix of artisan shops, artist studios and locally run businesses set in the rural and wild landscapes of our mountains, fields and rivers. This is not the land of large chain stores! Artists and artisans create their work in a variety of media and styles, from ceramic to wood, contemporary ceramics and paintings to historically accurate forged iron-work. Check out the artists, galleries, museums and shops. Also check the calendar of events for listings of fairs, festivals, shows and other events.

The original idea for the PA Route 6 Artisan Trail began in 2004, a result of several meetings across Route 6 which were held as plans were being made to nominate the highway as a Pennsylvania State Heritage Area. One of the strengths of Route 6 was the emerging cottage industry of local artisans and crafters, who chose to live in this beautiful area. Encouraging and assisting those artists to be successful was quickly recognized as a means to enhance a community's economy and quality of life.

The first PA Route 6 Artisan Trail guide was published in 2005. Since then the Trail has become a network of over 400-plus artisans, galleries and shoppe owners, tourism based business and other interested folks, who see the value of arts and culture in Northern Pennsylvania.
